The Body Athletic
Posted On 11/24/2009 14:24:30

Alot of my female friends ask me why I love sports so much.  I tell them, "it's all about the bods in the uniform."  I love athletes.

Stay classy, New Jersey.

Jimmy Dean done us wrong
Posted On 11/13/2009 13:04:11

I was going to write about sports first thing this morning but first I had to prepare myself a hearty breakfast.  Eggs and sausage.  And that's not a euphemism.  But not too much sausage.  Seems like the sausage isn't as filling as it used to.  And that would be because Jimmy Dean has been screwing us all by dropping how much sausage there is in the package while charging us the same price.  Outrageous!  Seems like every food manufacturer has been doing that to us lately.

Randy Taylor speaks for all of us.  Enraged by Jimmy Dean cutting the size of their sausage from 16 oz to 12 oz but still charging the same price, our hero left a voicemail complaint on the Jimmy Dean corporate line.  Damn you Jimmy Dean.  You lost a customer of 30 years.  30 years!  God bless you Randy Taylor.

Evil Empire Lives

This is a sad day in America...

A-Rod has a World Series ring.

Even Johnny Damon has one.

The Yankees are World Series Champs again.

Thoughts with my morning coffee

College Football

Connecticut:  A devastating loss for a team already emotionally devastated.

Florida:  The offense is back.

Iowa:  They teeter on the edge again but they don't fall.

Michigan:  If anyone still had any doubts, the wheels have come off the bus.  Inability to score in the red zone, ball insecurity, defensive lapses, lack mental toughness.  The Wolverines have it all.

Notre Dame:  Are they for real?  Who have they played and beaten?  They beat Wash. St. and lose to Michigan and we know about Michigan  (see comment above if you've forgotten).

USC:  Pete Carroll has to get back to coaching and not sitting on his own past glory.  The time masquerading as a contender is over.

NFL

Minnesota v. Green Bay:  Well, at least the return of Brett Favre to Green Bay wearing purple hasn't been over hyped at all by the networks.  Did I mention the "Favre cam" being deployed today by FOX?

New York Giants v. Philadelphia Phillies:  How many NY-PA matchups can a nation withstand?

Oakland Raiders:  Now, women from Tom Cable's past are accussing him of violence.  Raider Nation must be so proud.

San Francisco 49ers:  Okay, I'm a fan but I'm not blind.  I have an average team that is about to meet Peyton Manning in Indianapolis.  I don't care how healthy and rejuvenated Alex Smith feels, I don't expect a great outing for my team.  I just hope they lose with some dignity.

St. Louis v. Detroit:  With a blackout in Detroit, at least those poor fans will be spared the indignity of seeing this game.  Detroit is having a rough enough time in this economy as it is.

Washington Redskins:  Why in the world would Chris Samuels want to come back to play with the Redskins?

Baseball

I wonder if either of the two centaur paintings Alex Rodriguez has in his bedroom as nearly as good as this one circulating the internet by jasoncfry of Faith and Fear in Flushing.

And finally,

This is why nobody outside of Durham likes Duke Basketball.

Meth--so what?!
Posted On 10/31/2009 17:37:06

Okay, so in his new book, Andre Agassi admits to using crystal meth in 1997 (he dropped to no. 140 in the tennis ranking that year, by the way).  Not only that, but he actually got caught by a drug tested given by the WTA and talked his way out of a suspension.  Who cares about any of that -- he wore a wig!

He wore a wig and it fell apart before his first Grand Slam final---the 1990 French Final.  It was hold together by pins during the match and he blames his loss to Andres Gomez to his worrying about it falling apart during the match.  The mullet was a wig.  A wig!

Down with free speech

The NBA has squelched Tim Donaghy's book, Blowing the Whistle, by threatening to sue the publisher.  Nice work Stern.  And nice back bone, Random House.  You can read excerpts of the now-squelched book HERE.  Donaghy's looking for a new publisher.  Hopefully, he'll find one not beholden to the powers that be.

It's not worth it to be rich
Posted On 10/28/2009 11:14:15

It's tough to make ends meet sometimes.  Especially in this economy.  When I'm in line to sell my soda cans to have enough money to pay off my electric bill for the month, I often wonder how life would be if I earned $55 million in a few years.  I have to say, in all the ways I imagine life would be with my earning that much coin, I never really thought of the Antoine Walker way.

In 12 years, Antoine Walker made roughly 55 million NBA dollars (after taxes, but not counting endorsement deals.) Yet, he has over $4 million in unpaid debts and faces felony check fraud charges. How the hell did that happen?

Well, since he bounced about $1 million worth of checks in Las Vegas you can chalk a healthy portion of that up to gambling losses. But that doesn't explain it all way. Walker was a generous friend and teammate. A little too generous. A Boston Globe investigation into the former Celtic's lavish lifstyle includes free spending, not just on himself—in 2002, he had a new suit made for every day of the playoffs so he wouldn't have to wear the same one twice—but on those in his very large orbit. Teammates say he routinely picked up giant dinner tabs on the road or would hire limos to take everyone out on the town. According to his mother, at one point Walker was financially supporting seventy of his friends and relatives.

However, Diane Walker doesn't see what's wrong with that:

Walker's mother, Diane, said her son does not have a gambling problem. She added that "he doesn't party any more than the next person'' and "what you do with your life is your business.''

"Antoine doesn't owe anybody any explanation,'' said Diane Walker. "He's not out here hurting anybody. He's trying to live his life peacefully. That's all he's doing . . . My son is young. Why can't he just enjoy life, go where he wants to go?''

Because, believe it or not, $110 million does not last a entire lifetime. (At least not when you're spending $10 million a year on watches.) Apparently, Walker gave very little thought to where that money might come from once his basketball career was over. When he did invest, he invested poorly or simply gave it away to charities. Sadly, playing $15,000-a-hand blackjack with Michael Jordan is not a sound retirement strategy.

In 1999, when he signed a six-year, $71 million deal with the Celtics, then-president and coach Rick Pitino said Walker "will never have to worry about money again in his life." So add that to the list of everything else Pitino got wrong in Boston.
