Yesterday, without any fanfare, Jason Giambi’s baseball career likely ended when he was given his unconditional release from the Oakland A’s. Giambi had been on the disabled list since July 20th. Before he went on the DL, Giambi was batting .193, the lowest in the majors. He ends his career with 407 HRs, 1319 RBIs and a .405 OBP. Giambi will be remembered for profusely apologizing but not saying what he was apologizing for, though we all assume that it was for using steroids. He will be remembered for playing seven years with the Yankees with a $120 million dollar contract, steroids use, and the Yankees not winning the World Series during that time, despite the big payout and the performance enhancing drug use. Now, Giambi leaves the game, with lots of money, bad legs, a headlining member of the Steroids ERA, no World Series ring and numbers that no one will ever seriously consider whether they make him Hall of Fame worthy. Happy Retirement, Jason.
