CRYBABY COMMMODORE COMES TO CHICAGO

by Matt Minucci and Ed Quigley

A week after saying he could no longer play in Denver, Jay Cutler finally got what he wished for… or maybe he didn’t.  Either way the kid from Santa Claus, Indiana is coming to Chicago in a trade initiated by Cutler last week and finalized between the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears yesterday.   So, the kid who once spent Sundays singing the Super Bowl Shuffle and rooting for the Chicago Bears has now become one.  And doesn't he look overjoyed about it?

Jay Cutler: this is his happy face

Now, the question becomes whether Cutler will be singing Queen’s “We are the Champions” or Cinderella’s “Don’t know what you got till it’s gone”?  One thing’s for sure, whatever song is sung it better not upset Mr. Sensitive because the Bears have hitched their ride and future to a QB who first was unhappy playing in the shadow of John Elway and later became downright despondent over the mere IDEA that the new coach might want his old QB.  So, Mr. Sensitive demanded a trade… and then he un-demanded it. You see after initially deciding he could no longer play in Denver, Cutler wavered and determined he could succeed in the Mile High City.  But, after repeatedly blowing off both new coach Josh McDaniels and, more importantly, longtime Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, Cutler’s fate was sealed and it was only a matter of time before Denver decided to let the petulant Pro Bowler find a new fan base to irritate.

Now, I know a lot of experts are discussing whether Jay Cutler can succeed without Mike Shanahan, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, etc but I don’t wonder this.  The Bears don’t and have never had these types of playmakers under Lovie Smith.  No, Cutler will now be throwing to Devin Hester, Rashied Davis and Greg Olson.  But all is not lost for Jay; he is getting reunited with his favorite target while at Vanderbilt, Earl Bennett.  And we all know the success of Vanderbilt football.  However, regardless of the skill positions, the fact is Cutler is never going to be asked to win games like he was in Denver.  Lovie Smith and Ron Rivera don’t work that way.  Sure, there will be times when the Bears are going to need Cutler to make plays, something Kyle Orton couldn’t do, but mostly Lovie Smith is going to demand that Cutler simply doesn’t screw things up, something Rex Grossman simply couldn’t do.  Unfortunately for the Bears, if this off-season is any indication, screwing things up is what Jay Cutler does best.
