Strange injury of the day.  Adrian Beltre is of the Seattle Mariners has been placed on the DL with a torn testicle. Yes, he busted one of his boys on a ground ball.

Fanhouse has the story :

On Thursday, Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu, shaking his head in bewilderment, announced Beltre would be placed on the disabled list with a torn right testicle and was even more stunned when told that Beltre does not wear an athletic supporter, better known as a cup that protects the groin area.

---

In the ninth inning Wednesday night at Safeco Field, Beltre took the brunt of a hard grounder by the White Sox’ Alexei Ramirez to the groin area. Beltre recovered the baseball but threw wildly to first base for an error. He remained in the game, but labored for three more at-bats. Amazingly, he collected a single in the 14th inning and scored the winning run on Ken Griffey Jr.’s single.

Clearly Adrian never watched this video.  You can skip over to the four-minute mark if you're too impatient to learn about the science of keeping your boys protected.

I'm not making fun, I'm warning about the failure of proper protection.  I'm pro healthy boys and anti-busted ones.

Now we know that there are others that don't wear a cup during a game:  Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco.  It's a "comfort" issue for them.  Kiss those boys goodbye, fellas.

We have an update to the Adrian Beltre testicle injury.  He's off the disabled list and ta-dah, he learned his lesson.  He's now wearing a cup.  Some guys need pain to learn.

From The Seattle Weekly

Adrian Beltre Won't Take Cup Questions, Will Wear Cup

protectivecup.jpgTesticle jokes are funny, unless it's your testicle people are joking about. Then it can get old. At least, that's the experience of Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre. As you probably know, he's been on the Disabled List for a few weeks now with a contused testicle, the result of a bad-hop groundball and his own resistance to wearing a cup.

Well, he returned to the lineup last night, and apparently he won't be answering any more questions about his groin protection. (Previously, he'd indicated that he'll probably wear a cup while healing, but perhaps not after that.) Thus, press duties fell to manager Don Wakamatsu, who laconically declared, "Adrian will wear a cup tonight."

While Beltre could avoid the press, he couldn't avoid his teammates: Ken Griffey Jr. got the public address announcer to play "The Nutracker Suite" as Beltre approached the plate for his first plate appearance since the injury.

In other Mariners news, the team scored its first run in 18 innings last night, en route to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse of MLB). Way to go, M's!
